Nicole Canham

“voluptuous timbre and immaculate technique”

2007 artsACT Creative Arts Fellowship winner Nicole Canham's work is characterised by her diverse musical interests and commitment to expanding the audience for classical music in Australia. The past five years have seen her work not only as a professional musician in the mainstream as a chamber music specialist and with orchestras including the Australian Opera and Ballet, but also emerge as a highly talented Artistic Director and champion of new possibilities for the arts and culture. She completed her initial studies in Australia before undertaking post graduate study with renowned French clarinettist Philippe Cuper. Since returning to Australia, Nicole has performed at festivals nationwide including The Castlemaine State Festival, The Adelaide Fringe Festival, The Camden Haven Festival and the National Folk Festival. Her discography includes recordings for the Anthology of Australian Music, the Tall Poppies and Move Records labels. In 2008, Nicole completes her fourth and final festival as Artistic Director of the Canberra International Chamber Music Festival having increased attendances by more than 300% since her appointment.

Lisa Manning

Lisa graduated from the Canberra School of Music in 2002 with first class honours and has completed a Masters in Philosophy (music), studying under Alan Vivian. Lisa has successfully auditioned for prestigious national music programs, including the National Music Camp and the Australian Youth Orchestra in 2001. As a soloist she has performed the Mozart clarinet concerto with the Canberra Community Orchestra (CCO). Her orchestral experience includes work with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, the Canberra Ballet Orchestra, the Canberra School of Music Symphony Orchestra and the Canberra Community Orchestra. Now based in Melbourne, Lisa is enjoying building a name for herself as both performer and teacher. Since moving to Melbourne Lisa has travelled to Canada, participating in the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific. She is a regular performer with the Melbourne Opera Orchestra and is managing the Musica Viva In Schools program in Victoria. Lisa continues to enjoy traveling throughout Australia performing with Clarity.

Samantha Kelson

Samantha is director of the Australian chamber music collective the Kurrawong Ensemble, the Ruby Slipper Orchestra, and Ensemble Troika, a long standing group with Musica Viva In Schools NSW, as well as being a member of the ensemble Clarity. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide and her Masters in Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium. Enjoying a busy performing schedule throughout NSW & VIC, she has performed at many festivals throughout Australia including the Castlemaine State Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Camden Haven Music Festival and the Canberra International Chamber Music Festival. Her discography includes recordings with the Tall Poppies Label and Move Records. As a freelance orchestral musician she has played with such ensembles as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Adelaide Chamber Orchestra. When not performing or teaching, she works in natural health as a Kinesiologist.

Diana Springford

Diana Springford has played clarinet with Ensemble Offspring, Halcyon Ensemble, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Chambermaids Wind Quintet, Symphony Australia and the Sydney Wind Ensemble, among others, and has recorded for SBSTV, 2MBSFM and the ABC. She has taught clarinet and saxophone for many years and, at the University of Wollongong, tutored and lectured all sorts of philosophy courses. She is completing her PhD thesis on the philosophical understanding of the relationship between music and politics.
