SHOWS FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES Program 3: Felix the Cat! ready to tour 2010/2011 About the show Meet Felix the Cat of the 1920’s – before he got the Disney treatment! A little bit naughty, a little bit edgy, this show features vintage Felix, the world’s first cartoon star. Live music accompanies the screenings of the cartoons Felix Gets Revenge, Felix Trips Through Toyland and Felix Flirts with Fate. See the sound track being created right before your eyes as four clarinets with assorted paraphernalia from whistles and sticks to percussion perform and improvise in real time to Felix’ on screen adventures. This show has been performed as a 45 minute show for school children which included time for Q & A, and as a late night cabaret show for adults. This educational show highlights the progress in film/cartoon production and opens up a world of exploration for students to discover and experience silent film with this quirky well known character. Suitable for Prep/Kindergarten to Year 10. In progress: an extended version of the show, bringing it to 60 minutes incorporating films from young animators with arrangements of original Felix the Cat music. In the show 4 clarinet players sit in front of or to one side of a screen (depending on theatre set up) playing live musical accompaniment and sound effects to black and white Felix the Cat cartoons from the 1920s. Music by Elena Kats-Chernin. The score includes toy percussion and toy piano played by the clarinettists. There’s time for questions from the children at the end of the show if desired. Program 4: Billy Goats Gruff ready to tour 2010/2011 About the show In this musical re-telling of the Norwegian children’s classic, four clarinets take on the roles of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Troll. All the Billy Goats want to do is cross the bridge and enjoy the juicy green grass on the other side of the river – but not if one very grumpy Troll can help it! Different members of the clarinet family from the baby to the biggest become the characters of the tale bringing it to life. A favourite amongst children and parents the world over, The Three Billy Goats Gruff will capture the hearts of all who hear it. A wonderful introduction to a family of musical instruments and a rollicking 40 minutes of entertainment. This is a show for clarinet quartet and narrator. Four clarinet players, on different members of the clarinet family – tiny through to big bass clarinets, play music to the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The tale is narrated/acted with a little interaction between the instrumentalists and the narrator. This is a funny and entertaining introduction to the clarinet family and a lovely retelling of an age-old favourite. Literature can be explored in so many different guises. This show gives children a unique experience and can inspire their imagination beyond words, entering the world of language and sound. MULTIMEDIA/THEATRE PERFORMANCES Program 5: The Six Memos The Six Memos will take you on a raucous, vital, surprising, and eloquent journey that is one quartet’s investigation of the world of musical artistry. Inspired and informed by current philosophies on lightness, The Six Memos explore the issue of what constitutes serious music in the 21st century. This show can be presented in a concert/cabaret style version or as the theatre piece The Six Memos: the unbearable lightness of being a clarinet quartet. What is the difference between lightness and superficiality? Do different aesthetics carry different weights? What then shall we choose? The Six Memos is part concert, part theatre performance. In this mesmerising show an eclectic program of live music ranging from Sitsky and Sculthorpe to Gershwin, Strauss and techno is combined with voice-overs, huge projected images and text, and a stunning lighting design by David Longmuir. Performed from memory as members of Clarity stand, walk and dance through the space, The Six Memos reanimates classical music in a theatrical context, examining notions of artistry from a very human perspective in this 75 minute tour-de-force.
