Pure clarinets

(‘klaeriti) n. 1. Clearness, as of expression. 2. Dynamic Australian clarinet quartet

“exuberance and virtuosity…
finger-snapping good”
The Weekend Australian, July 6-7 2002

Take a journey of sonority and style with Australia’s unique chamber ensemble, Clarity. Celebrating 10 years of Clarity in 2006, this quartet has established itself as an entertaining, versatile and technically brilliant group. Leave any pre-conceived notion of the clarinet at the door – these musicians explore every genre and make it their own, from contemporary art music to jazz standards. If your most recent memory of the clarinet is the last time you played it in your high school band, it’s time to get out in search of Clarity!

Equally at home on the concert platform or more unusual settings, Clarity has performed at every occasion from an all-night rock concert in outback Australia, to London’s St-Martin-in-the-Fields.

The quartet has appeared at the Castlemaine State Festival, The National Multicultural Festival, The Festival of Jazz and Roses and for Canberra’s Australia Day concerts in Commonwealth Park. They are regular performers in the highly successful Summer Sounds series at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, and have performed around Australia in Queensland, the Northern Territory, Victoria and NSW. They have opened concerts for the late Slim Dusty and Stephane Grappelli, marched and played with 6000 athletes as part of the Australian Masters Games, presented recitals for the National Gallery of Australia and the Alliance Francaise.

“London clarinet enthusiasts have had a very good August this year thanks to four young musicians from Canberra, Australia, known as the Clarity Clarinet Quartet.” The Clarinet, International Clarinet Association Journal

In 2000, Clarity made their highly successful international debut in London at St Martin-in-the-Fields. Whilst in the UK, they also presented concerts at St James Church, Piccadilly, and at the Hindhead Clarinet Summer School. In November 2002, they completed their 3rd international tour of the UK, France and Belgium, performing 25 concerts in 21 days for Jeunesses Musicales, Kneller Hall London, the Namur Theatre and the Palais de Beaux Arts in Charleroi.

The quartet’s debut CD, ‘Alive’, was released in late 2001, and the first run sold out in 3 months. ‘Alive’ has since received regular local and national airplay on ABC Classic FM. ‘This is Clarity’ is the quartet's long-awaited second disc, available through Move Records, move.com.au

The quartet performs a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary works. Committed to the performance and promotion of contemporary Australian music, they have developed a “New Ears” initiative to introduce new music to regular concertgoers and they work energetically to promote the exciting live music culture in Australia. Clarity is available for concerts through Musica Viva’s Country Wide Touring Program, contact Elissa Campbell at musicaviva@mva.org.au.
